The year is quickly coming to an end, we only have 12 days left of school. It's hard to believe. We have many fun and exciting events coming up including our talent show, field day, the annual fifth grade bowling field trip and other end of the year celebrations. Students have accomplished many things this year and have shown a lot of growth both personally and academically. All students saw growth on their MAP tests and majority of students were able to meet their growth targets, exceeding our classroom goal of 70%.

I hope you enjoy the extended holiday weekend and find some time to relax!

Spring MAP testing starts next week for room 314. The schedule below outlines the days and times the tests will take place. Students should get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast prior to the test. I have also encouraged them to be working on Compass Learning and Scoot Pad to review the concepts that we have worked on this year. We are calling it their study guide for the test! Students have made wonderful gains and I look forward to celebrating their success on the tests.

We are continuing our inquiry unit on forms of energy. We have been learning about how sound travels. We did an experiment to show how vibrations make sound and Mr. Ivanyos taught us about sound in relation to the guitar!

This week we continued our inquiry unit on forms of energy. We learned how to look up library books through our school's system so that we could write down books and check them out for out inquiry projects. We also finished our fraction math assessments and started learning about algebra patterns.

For this secction in math we are learnig about how to multiply and divide fractions. When we are dividing fractions we have this method that we use. It is called KCF, which can only be used in dividing fractions. The K stands for keep it which you keep the first fraction the same. The C stands for change the division sign into a mutiplication sign. The F stands for flip it which means you flip the numerator and the denominator around in the second fraction. When we are multipling fractions all you do is multiply the numerators together to get the answer for the numerator. Then you multiply the denminators together to get the denominator. When you are dividing or multiplying you always ask yourself at the end can we reduce?

8/12 x 1/2 = 8/24  Can I reduce?  1/3

3/5 divided by 2/3 equals 9/10

We had a lot of fun this week. This week what we did was: worked on our Civil War prsentations, getting ready for our presentations on the keynote app. We also did Achieve3000 articles about the civil rights. Today we got to see a real athlete from the Olympics. Her name is Debbie Sullivan. Her sport was race walking. She made it to the Sydney Olympics in 2000. She also gave us dream rocks because she had a dream and she told us never give up on your dream even if someone laughs at you and your dream dont give up!
